The Wall from Ponorici | ancient, place with historical importance, fortification, ancient ruins

Romania / Hunedoara / Pui /
ancient, place with historical importance, fortification, ancient ruins

Huge Dacian dam fortification (2.5 km) of wood and earth, occupying the whole area between the valley where the village of Cioclovina and the Ponorici valley are located. The purpose was to close the access to Sarmizegetusa from the southwest, from Valea Streiului. The main wall made out of stone, whose length is over 2.5 km, called by the locals ''Troianul'' (the Trojan), is based on the thickness between 10 and 14 m, and the height, in its current form, measures from 0.80 m to 3.0 m. In the southern part there are two partially overlapping Roman marching camps of different sizes, probably made after forcing the fortification in each of the two wars with the Dacians.
