Established in 1948, Statistics Department is one of the few departments, the university had started with. At that time there were very few universities of the country offering Statistics as one of the subjects. Initially it started with under graduate course but the PG classes started in 1949 with Prof. V.S. Huzurbazor Ph.D. (Canter), Former Professor and Head of Statistics department of Pune and Adam Smith Prize Winner from Cambridge University. Since then, it has continued to be a personification of Statistics education and research activities in the whole of the North Eastern India. The department was served by mentors of the subject like, Prof. J. Medhi, Prof. Sudhendu Biswas, Professor Zachavia, Prof. N.U. Probhu, (who later became the Professor of operation Research in Cornell University, U.S.A), Prof. S.M. Sinha etc. Initially the department was housed at the present Physics Department but later on in the year 1983 was shifted to its present location which is being shown in this map.
