The three story, 23,233 sq. ft., house was built in 1923 for Mrs. Myron T,. McLaren at a cost approximately $335,000. Designed by architect Fitzhugh Scott, the Tudor Revival mansion is located on 3.9-acres on Lake Michigan with a 175 feet lake frontage. The grounds included one of the largest private outdoor swimming pools in Wisconsin in the 1920's. Gertrude Schlesinger was the daughter of wealthy industrialist Ferdinand Schlesinger, the owner of Milwaukee Coke and Gas Co.

In 1949 the property was purchased by the Milwaukee Teachers College for $80,000. In 1953, the pool was filled with dirt from the excavation for Mellencamp Hall because it was to expensive to maintain.

The building was used as a women's dormitory until July, 1964 when it was converted to a conference center. The UWM Foundation and Alumni Association are currently housed in the Alumni House.
