After many years of offering courses at separate locations in Fort Wayne, Indiana University and Purdue University opened the combined campus of IPFW in 1964. The 1970s were a time of rapid growth, accompanied by the formal merger of the campus administration in 1975. A regional campus of both Indiana University and Purdue University, IPFW was managed by Purdue under the terms of an agreement that was renewed every five years.

In the 1980s, an academic structure was created to emphasize relationships among departments rather than relationships of departments to Indiana or Purdue mission assignments. In recent years, the university has seen a major increase in enrollment and construction. The Waterfield Campus (directly east across Crescent Avenue) opened in 2004 offering the first on-campus student housing options. In 2006, IPFW Athletics joined the NCAA Division I Summit League. The John and Ruth Rhinehart Music Center (2007), Holiday Inn (2008), Medical Education Building (2009), Keith Busse Steel Dynamics Alumni Center (2010), and the Student Service Complex (2011) are all visual examples of this recent growth.

A campus of Purdue University, PFW was founded on July 1, 2018, when its predecessor university, Indiana University – Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) formally split into two separate institutions: PFW and Indiana University Fort Wayne. PFW is the fifth-largest university in Indiana. As of 2018, the 688-acre campus was home to 46 buildings and an undergraduate and graduate student population totaling more than 10,000.
