Originally an office block built in the 1950s as part of the sprawling Collins Printers complex that once stood on this site, it was acquired by the University of Strathclyde in 1974. Of all the buildings that the University acquired only this, and the huge book warehouse that became the Curran Building in 1981 were kept. The rest was demolished. The building didn't get its name (from Lord Hope of Craighead, a former Strathclyde Chancellor) until the late 1990s, prior to this this it was simply called "181 St James's Road" and housed Estates Management and not much else.

In recent years it has become a lot more important, housing teaching departments such as the Law School, and will get even more important in the coming years as the Uni centralises all the Humanities and Social Sciences departments into the Curran and Lord Hope Buildings.
