It is mandatory to spend some time in Shipka's Birth of Christ Temple on the way to the Saint Nikola peak. The initiative for the Temple's construction belongs to Count Ignatyev and Olga Skobeleva and it was erected with donations from Bulgaria and Russia. It houses the remains of more than 9 000 Russian and Bulgarian soldiers who fought in the Russo-Turkish War. The Temple follows the architectural style of 17th century Russian churches and its bells are made of the melted shells collected after the battles in the region.
