Located in western Lithuania, covers area 1706 km². Divided into 11 elderships. Administrative centre - Šilutė.
Šilutė city claims to be centre of Minor Lithuania ethnographic region, many prewar heritage remained. Šilutė and Švėkša has an urbanistic monument status. Vast Nemunas Delta Regional Park is located in western municipality part. There is the biggest Lithuania`s - Rusnė Island with the lowest point (-1,3 meters) in the country. Seasonal floods are peculiarity of littoral and Nemunas riverside. In Cape Ventė was established bird ringing station, nearby lies lagoonic origin Krokų Lanka lake.
