Located in western Lithuania, covers area of 586 km². Divided into 5 elderships. Administrative centre and the only city in municipality is Rietavas.
Rietavas was the first electrified Lithuanian city with telephone line. Tverai town was mentioned in 1251 during the reign of Samogitian duke Vykintas. Municipality is second (after Neringa muicipality) forested area in western part of Lithuania, Rietavas Forests covers half of area. There are many rivers, longest of them are Jūra, Aitra, Minija. Highway A1 (Vilnius-Klaipėda) is extended across the municipality area in south.
