Pontcysyllte Aqueduct

United Kingdom / Wales / Rhosllanerchrugog /
aqueduct, interesting place, UNESCO World Heritage Site, Grade I Listed (UK)

Spectacular aqueduct built between 1795 and 1805 carrying the Ellesmere branch of the Llangollen Canal over the River Dee at a height of 126 feet. It is 1007 feet long, 11 feet wide, and 5 feet 3 inches deep. Usually attributed to Thomas Telford, but there is a strong argument that it was really the work of William Jessop, who was the senior engineer employed by the canal company at the time. It has been included within a designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009. The overall UNESCO site also includes 18km of canal and associated tunnels, bridges and aqueducts.
