This aqueduct is part of the mona estate which was founded in the 1660s by Major Richard Hope. The large sugar estate got its water from Hope River at Papine. Sugar was made at Hope until 1914. Extensive sections of the aqueduct is still found in the grounds of Hope Gardens and the University of the West Indies.
