This area is downtown Mesquita, a mainly residential, commercial and bureaucratic spot. The city of Mesquita used to be part of the municipality of Nova Iguacu until 1990 and is located about 40 km (25 miles) from downtown Rio de Janeiro. Nowadays (2012), Mesquita has approximately 180,000 inhabitants and it is considered a poor city, due to its population income and its location, in the outskirts ("periferia") of Rio.
