Payyanur, the name derived from payyan[Subrahmanyan] and uru[land]meaning the land of Lord Subrahmanya. It is so called because here situated the famous temple of Lord Subrahmanya.This include in the three famous temples of Subrahmanya in the Kannur district. The other two are the Peralasseri temple and the Makreri temple. Kandoth in Payyanur is famous for pottery. Theru attained fame by the manufacture of khadi.
Uliyathu kadavu is well known in history as a result of the epic salt sathyagraha. Nandakumar Koroth in his 'History of Payyanur' reveals the the importance of Payyanur in the freedom struggle of India. Payyanur witnessed non-violent and violent struggles as a part of the freeom movement. The historic salt satyagraha,'pattini jatha', 'Ayithochadana Prakshobam', Quit India movement etc reveals the potentialities of the people of Payyanur. Payyanur provides a relaxing place to the tourists. Gandhi park, former Gandhi Maidan, situated in the middle of the town exhibits a good piece of art. Nearby place Kunhimangalam is famous as the land of mangroves.

Earlier Payyanur was known as "kokkannissery" which is now the central part of the Town. Payyanur has the "Ezhimala Naval Academy" and also the Asia's largest natural harbour and significant in Naval Defence system of entire south tip with easy support to Cochin and also to Mangalore Ports when needed.
