The park was Established in 1972 and expanded with land acquisition in 2010.

While dismissed offhand for over a century as being a hoax, modern analysis of the ancient script has presented very strong evidence that the Runestone could in no way have been forged, and is authentic.

If it is indeed authentic, it is proof of Viking exploration in the 14th century.
