Teck Coal's Fording River mine opened in 1969 and currently produces 10.5 million tonnes of metallurgical coal for export. Over 200 million tonnes of coal have been mined so far. The mine currently consists of three pit areas--from south to north they are Eagle Mtn (just east of the Wash Plant), Turnbull and Henretta pits. Future plans are to open two pits on Castle Mtn to the south of Eagle Mtn. Fording River has more than 25 years of coal reserves left, and over 100 years of resources that can potentially be developed.
