This was the site of the National Explosives Works from 1888-1919 (but was used for explosives storage until the 1960s). The buildings have been overgrown and overtaken by the grass and shifting sand, but you can see the outlines of the buildings in the satellite pictures. There were lots of separate buildings to ensure that the whole complex was not destroyed if one of the steps went awry.

This area is now a nature reserve.
