Upscale retail.

Mills Brothers Ltd began in the small vibrant city of Halifax during the Art Deco movement, when people were in wide-eyed wonder of the international influence of this style. Individuality and freedom of expression were in fashion and Mills. founders were no strangers to either one.

"I hate ostentation but love elegance," said Hugh O. Mills, co-founder of Mills Brothers - winner of two national business excellence awards in retailing and a pioneer in radio broadcasting.

In 1915, Hugh arrived in Halifax with some pocket change and a big personality. Five short years later, his name was on the sign of a dry goods store, as a partner of NIELSEN AND MILLS. A few years, after the Nielsens retired and after luring brother Willett from his adventures in Florida (a free spirit turned accountant), the store became known as Mills Brothers Ltd.

Located at the heart of downtown on Spring Garden Road, this award winning business is now a specialty department store, offering European and North American fashions for men and women. With twelve departments to discover, Mills offers friendly and knowledgeable staff who assist in gifts, homeware, cosmetics, fragrance, hosiery, accessories, lingerie, coats, sportswear or finding that perfect little dress or skirt.

Shopping at Mills has been a tradition for four generations of Atlantic Canadians. Eighty-seven years later, it remains family-owned and operated by the MacLellan family, lead by Willett`s son-in-law, Ian, his wife Jane (Willett.s daughter), and daughters Heather, Janet and Kathryn.
