mine, gold mine
This is the mining right for Tao Lekoa Gold Mine. It was previously owned by AngloGold Ashanti then in February 2009 they sold it to Simmer and Jack Mines. The deal was for R600 million plus a 3% royalty on net revenue generated from the assets. As part of the deal the parties agreed to subtract unhedged free cash flow generated by Tau Lekoa during 2009, up to a maximum of R150-million, from the purchase price. On June 27, 2011 Village Main Reef acquired Simmer and Jack Mines in a R1 billion reverse takeover to become the owner of Tao Lekoa.
Access to the undergound workings is via a vertical twin-shaft system with one for people and materials and the other for ventilation and ore transport. Shaft sinking operations began in 1986 with production commencing in 1991. Due to the complex geological environment, a scattered mining method is employed with pre-developed access tunnels in the footwall. The pre-developed raises are spaced 120m to 180m apart. The main levels are spaced 150m apart, which at the average dip of 27 degrees resulting in a raise length of 300m. Following ledging of the raises breast mining is conducted in a strike direction.
Regionally Tao Lekoa is located in the Witwatersrand Basin which is a late Archean-aged basin that is comprised of an inter-bedded sequence of arenaceous and argillaceous sediments. The basin is located on the Kaapvaal Craton and is 6 km thick, 300 km wide from northest to southwest, and 100 km wide northwest to southeast. All sections of the basin except the northern section are overlain by 4km of volcanic and sedimentary rocks from the Archaean, Proterozoic and Mesozoic period.
Locally mining occurs on the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR), specifically the Multiple Scout Facies, at depths ranging from 800 to 1,743 metres. The VCR is a narrow tabular orebody with a channel width that varies between 0.1 m and 3.0 m in thickness and dips at approximately 30° to the west. The area is intersected by several major faults striking northeast to southwest and dipping southeast.
