The Fort of Lillo is one of the 17 fortifications constituting the defensive girdle around Antwerp. It was built in 1579 to defend Antwerp against the Spanish attackers.

Through the centuries the fortress was captured and retaken by several nation armies. In 1830 128 civilians were living there in 34 houses inside the fortress.

Due to the expansion of the Port of Antwerp, the part of the village surrounding the fortress had to be pulled down. The Fort of Lillo is what is left of it. The same happened to the nearby fortress, the Redoubt of Oorderen, 5.5 kilometres farther East, which has also disappeared.
