Arcelor Mittal Hunedoara (Hunedoara)

Romania / Hunedoara / Hunedoara
 industrial area, production, steelworks

This is the second largest steel producing plant in Romania. It has a tradition of over 122 years of steel making. Archeological finds sugest that ferous metalurgy has been practiced in the area for at least 2000 years. There is also an Iron Museum in the plant.

  • The iron museum I mentioned above is no longer, it has been vandalised by gypsies. The main reason for I guess they broke in is a large steel sculpture made out of blooms, billets and rolled products made in the mill. Scrap theft is common in Hunedoara and all industrial places in Romania.
  • Indeed. The place is now a barren land, not showing much of its "former glory". However, there are plans to rebuild the complex, although it might also serve other industries (factories, etc.). The main reason for gypsies vandalizing the place is actually the steel itself. They sell it to recycling centers. Incredibly, they even scrap the plant itself (e.g. buildings, ovens), and it's not limited to this place. Entire factories have literally been taken down this way.
