Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney Art Studio (Old Westbury, New York) | LIGC - Long Island Gold Coast, interesting place

USA / New York / Old Westbury / Old Westbury, New York
residence, LIGC - Long Island Gold Coast, interesting place, art studio

Built in 1913 by Delano & Aldrich as a Neoclassical art studio for Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, wife of Harry Payne Whitney (she is responsible for the creation of the Whitney Museum in NYC). Gertrude asked for the art studio in the woods to get away from her husband's polo-playing friends. Murals were created by Howard Cushing and Robert Chanler for the walls, while Paul Chalfin executed the groin-vaulted entry ceiling and mosaic floor.

Today it remains owned by the original family.

  • Privately owned by a member of Gertrude Whitney's family. I love the idea that the family still lives there!
