Kotzebue Wind Farm is located about 4 miles (7 km) south of the town of Kotzebue, Alaska.
It was begun in 1997 with the erection of 3 Atlantic Orient (AOC) 66-kW 15m turbines. In 1999 a further 7 and in 2002 2 more AOC turbines were added. These are all located in the northern part of the site. By 2007 an additional 5 turbines (1 Northern Power 100-kW, 3 AOC 50-kW, and 1 remanufactured 65-kW Vestas V15) had been added. Finally, in 2012, 2 EWT 900-kW turbines were added, bringing the wind farm to 19 turbines with a combined nominal capacity of 2.9 MW.
The system also includes battery storage so power can be stored and released when needed.
