The Capuchin Monastery was founded in 1688. In December 1796 French invaders expelled the monks. Sometime later, the building served as a refuge for brigands, a name the French gave to the Flemish rebels in the Peasants War (1796-1798). The fighters took the lead from the roofs and remelting it to bullets. This was the beginning of the degradation of the fairly large complex. Only one wing remained.

In 1939 the city council who now was the owner, restored the building.
In 1988 a new comprehensive restoration so that the Academy of Fine Arts could took shelter here.
