residence, LIGC - Long Island Gold Coast, Italianate style (architecture), movie / film / TV location
Estate home designed c. 1904 in the Italianate style by Carrère & Hastings for Hermanes Barkulo Duryea, Jr {sportsman}. Duryea was the owner of Dunbar II who was the winner of the 1914 English Derby. He had horse stables in England, France, and the United States. The design has been characterized has having a "split personality - prison in the front and Wizard of Oz in the back". The architects also altered an old farmhouse to become the gate lodge.
In 1907, the estate and 40,000sqft home on 32 acres was purchased by Bradley Martin, Jr {attorney, financier} who added a library and tennis court. In addition to a private law practice, Martin served as director of Standard Trust Co., Van Norden Trust Co., Nineteenth Ward Bank, Hudson Trust Co. of New Jersey, Madison Trust Co. of New York, and Security Bank of New York. When he died in 1963, his son Esmond Bradley Martin, Sr. bought out the shares inherited by his brothers. He continued to call the estate "Knole" and had it decorated by Alavoine & Co. of Paris.
After 95 years of family ownership, the estate on the remaining thirty-two acres (out of the original 100) was put on the market for $16 million. Sothebys held a sale for the important pieces of furniture the same year.
Knole was featured in the Dudley Moore film ''Arthur''; ''The Devil's Advocate,'' with Al Pacino; and ''Reversal of Fortune,'' starring Jeremy Irons and Glenn Close. The main gate is still extant at the intersection of Post Road and Maple Crest Drive.
