When Abbot Kinney opened his "Venice of America" (4 July 1905) the center piece at rail's end was the Grand Lagoon. It was 250 feet across and 10 feet deep, and the entry to four main canals radiating into the residential areas.
In 1927 the City of Los Angeles began filling in the canals and lagoons of Venice and paving them over. By 1930 all that was left of the Grand Lagoon was the Venice Traffic Circle.
