Once a bustling large, modern village of Russian immigrants and Alutiiq natives, Afognak was largely destroyed by the 1964 Good Friday earthquake and subsequent tsunamis.

The village land sunk six feet, washing away most of the buildings. The coastline eroded into the ocean and much of the vegetation was killed due to salt water inundating the water table.

Most of the population moved to the new community of Port Lions to the southwest, often bringing buildings that survived the disaster with them by barge.
