Railroad & parking facilities below street level to the west of downtown is known as The Gulch. This area, as well as Underground Atlanta was the original street level for the town of Atlanta in the 1800's. After the construction of viaducts & later abandonment (in particular with the destruction of the passenger train station), The Gulch was born. There have been numerous attempts at developing this derelict area, most recently the site of a modern multimodal station.
