Established in 1865, this neighborhood's early inhabitants were primarily freed slaves and Jewish immigrants. During the early 1900s, the neighborhood was home to a diverse group of residents, including African Americans, Jews, and Greeks. During the mid-1960's, Summerhill gained notoriety during a riot that was sparked by the shooting of a black male by the police. Over the years, many influential people have called Summerhill home, including developer Herman Russell, boxer Evander Holyfield, and singer Gladys Knight.
