Hatherton Lake was created in the 19th century on the site of former limestone mines. The cost of pumping water from the mines became too expensive for Edward Walhouse who decided to cease mining on the site allow the mines to flood. Boating was permitted on the lakes soon after.
In 1845, the Mayor of Walsall was taking an evening swim in the lake when he drowned. Another man drowned whilst searching for his body.
The lake is named after Lord Hatherton.
