This lake along with its marshes, swamps and shallow pools were once fields along the river Anker. However, mining subsidence caused the lakes to form and in turn, give birth to a wonderful natural habitat that supports an abundance of wildlife including birds, dragonflies and orchids.
The lake and its natural surroundings, including Alvecote Meadows and Pooley Fields are part of Alvecote Pools Nature Reserve. It is protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
