LUXE Building (Saskatoon)

Canada / Saskatchewan / Saskatoon
 office building, condominium

The Safeway grocery chain built the original building on this site, in a Spanish villa style. It featured turrets along the roofline, clay roof tiles on the façade, and either Tyndall or greystone walls. However, exterior alterations over the years rendered most of these details unidentifiable. Vacated by its last tenant, Northern Paints, and with little opposition other than the local heritage society, the building was demolished in late 2006.

The plan for this site had been a 12 storey residential/office building. Opinion was divided between business people who welcome the new development and residents who objected to the building's height, saying it would forever change the historic, low-rise character of Broadway Avenue. The developer cancelled the original project in April 2007, citing rising construction costs. A new, scaled-down six-storey condo project called LUXE was unveiled in May 2008.
