Built c. 1910 to house the Faculty of Philosophy with funding from an anonymous donor. The main floor featured a large social room and study for the women graduate students. The third floor contained the Carpenter Library which had a remnant of Brennan House, formerly at 84th Street near the Hudson River, in which Poe wrote "The Raven."

It is now used by Columbia University's English and Comp Lit department, French Department, Philosophy Department, and Undergraduate Writing Center. The building connects underground to Kent Hall through the basement. It was awarded a National Historic Landmark status for advances that took place in the second floor laboratory of Edwin H. Armstrong.
