The Battery Street Tunnel, built in 1952 and opened on July 24, 1954, ran for 3,140 feet (957 m) under Battery Street in Seattle, Washington's Belltown neighborhood from Western Avenue in the southwest to Denny Way in the northeast. It connects the Alaskan Way Viaduct to Aurora Avenue N., providing continuity for Washington State Route 99. The tunnel was fairly cheaply built as a cut-and-cover structure beneath Battery Street. However, the 2001 Nisqually Earthquake caused minor cosmetic damage to the structure and it was decided in 2007 to replace it, and the Alaska Way Viaduct with the new double-decked Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement tunnel, and was filled-in with material excavated to build the new tunnel.
According to Wikipedia:
WSDOT is filling in the Battery Street Tunnel, because the 1952 cut-and-cover tunnel does not meet modern safety standards, is expensive to maintain, and was made redundant by the Alaskan Way tunnel.
