Belltown is a subset of an area known as the "Denny Regrade." Long time ago, this area had a big hill known as Denny Hill, but town leaders and city engineers decided to remove the hill so as to make this general area flat and level for easier development and transportion around the young city of Seattle. It was a major transitional event in young Seattle's "growing up" years. Read more about it on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denny_Regrade
