Yellow Springs, Ohio

USA / Ohio / Yellow Springs /

Yellow Springs is a village with a population of 3,697 in 2020

Like much of the surrounding area, it was settled around 1800, although visible reminders of earlier cultures - like Orator's Mound in nearby Glen Helen - are common in the region. The name of the town was derived from the iron oxide-rich spring just east of the current town's borders. Much of the village's early commerce was based around its supposedly curative spring water.

The Little Miami Railroad linking Cincinnati and Springfield once ran through the village, but the route is now a paved bicycle trail. The historic railway station has been rebuilt, and is now used as a visitor information center and art gallery.

  • Yellow Springs is Hippie Central in the middle of nowhere. Quaint little town hosts Antioch College, a free-thinking anything-goes throwback to Woodstock era thinking, dress code, drug use, etc. On the plus side, Young's Jersey Dairy is just a mile down the road and has some of the best ice cream and dairy treats you'll find anywhere in Ohio.
  • It's like everybody who reads the New York Times or is a avid NPR listener in the Miami Valley self-segregated themselves here. The place is fun, but it's almost a South Park parody of self-righteous liberalism.
  • A great place for a weekend getaway
  • 2009 dates for the Yellow Springs Streetfair are June 13th & October 10th, 2009.
  • That nighttime photo isn't a UFO visitation - it's the annual New Year's ball drop at the intersection of Xenia Avenue and Short Street. And unlike New York, where they drop the ball only once (amateurs!), the folks in Yellow Springs like to do it a couple of times.
