village, county seat
The Ohio River village of Gallipolis is the county seat of Gallia County. The area was settled in 1790 by French immigrants fleeing the French Revolution.
In the late 1960s the town - along with the West Virginia town of Point Pleasant just across the river - was the focus of a UFO scare. The incidents, which culminated with the collapse of the Silver Bridge in 1967, were described in the book, "The Mothman Prophesies" by John Keel.
Gallipolis was the hometown of restaurateur Bob Evans.
