production, oil and gas industry
Huntington Ingalls Industries Avondale is a former shipbuilder now serving the oil and gas industry located on the banks of the Mississippi River. Once a major shipbuilder for the US Navy, Avondale produced a wide variety of surface craft for the US Navy, US Coast Guard, NOAA and civilian customers since its 1938 founding. Following its takeover by HII in 2012, the yard was deemed uneconomical to remain in operation as the majority of its workload was for US Navy contracts which HII preferred to route to their large facility in Pascagoula. Faced with closure by the end of 2013, the shipyard was repositioned to support construction projects for the oil & gas industry.
