The clock was erected in 1555, but it was destroyed by fire in 1600, and rebuilt in 1602 with the addition of a clock and a heptagonal cover. The clock was replaced in 1899 with a chiming clock. The cross has been restored several times. In 1984 the old roof covering was replaced with the present lead and the clock also was restored to working order. The cross is a Grade I listed structure.
