Bingley was first granted its market charter by King John in 1212. The Market Hall and Butter Cross was completed in 1753 by Thomas Lister "at the considerable expense" of £12.13.10½. The stock are said to have been the last in use in Yorkshire; 1870 is given as the date. Certainly they were still employed in 1866.
