Norwich

United Kingdom / England / Norwich /
 city, county town - UK/Ireland

"Norwich, a fine city" Norwich (pronounced No-rich with a soft 'o') is the county town of Norfolk and one of the most isolated urban areas in England as the majority of Norfolk is flat and rural. The historic city, on the other hand, has a population which almost reaches 130,000 and a six-day-a-week Market (described as being a scene of war with the Council and the market traders). It is the largest place in England which is not connected by a consistent dual-carriageway, and has the biggest Park and Ride operation

  • Can we be shown St Julian's Alley, off Rouen Road, where the St Julian's Church is situated. This was the anchorhold of Julian of Norwich. http://www.umilta.net/julian.html
  • Pronunciation differs. 'Norridge' is usual but in local dialect I've also heard 'Naaar'dge' - Norfolk dialect is a whole new world (Friends of Norfolk Dialect at http://www.norfolkdialect.com/)
  • There is also a very popular univeristy here bringing lots of students, extensive art, music and culture scenes. It has stunning rural countryside, lots of farms, farmers and of course tractors!!
  • The population on here is also out, possibly just the population of the central parts of the city, but if you include Thorp Saint Andrew, Sprowston, Spixworth etc, i'm sure your looking more around the 200,000 mark
