Said to be the largest (36 ft.) equestrian statue in the world. Sculpturer John Houser took ten years to complete and the bronze statue was unveiled in April 2007. Original name of the statue was to be "El Conquistador" (after Spanish explorer Don Juan de Onate), but controversy over the Spanish treatment of the indigenous people (Native Indians) led to the current name of "The Equestrian." One of seven statues the city of El Paso plans to erect depicting the history of the city. Many still favor the original planned name.
