Guy Thorpe worked stringers in the Rattlesnake (renamed Bonnie Claire) Mine from the 1880s until his death in 1893. He moved his gold ore steam arrastra operation from Old Camp to Stinking Springs, which was renamed Thorpe's Well, due to better availability of water.

Thorpe installed a five-stamp mill here that handled all the ore in the region. The mill ran for twenty years until the Bonnie Claire Bullfrog Mining Company bought it to run their ore for the Gold Mountain District.
