Historic iron and steel mill. Founded in 1852, the Cambria Iron Company of Johnstown made an important contribution to American industrialism - it is considered one of the greatest of the early modern iron and steel works. Forerunner of Bethlehem Steel Company, United States Steel Corporation, and other late 19th and 20th century steel companies, the Cambria plant became a model for the industry.

Ultimately, Bethlehem Steel's enormous complex of mills and furnaces sprawled for 12 miles along the Conemaugh and Little Conemaugh Rivers. The works closed in 1992 with the loss of 12,000 jobs, but many of the plant's buildings remain standing to this day.

In 1989 Cambria Iron Works Complex was declared a National Historic Landmark.

I have marked the historic heart of this complex which has several historic buildings--machine shop, carpentry shop, blacksmith shop, electrical storage building--dating back as early as 1854. Many of these historic buildings are still used for steel fabrication and light manufacturing.
