office building, local government, housing services

9-story International-style government office building completed in 1970. Designed by Kelly & Gruzen, it has concrete piers and paneled spandrels. The two long sides of the building are divided into 13 bays, and the shorter sides have eight bays each. The wide windows are of bronze-tinted glass. Many of the ground floor bays are recessed, as are all of the bays on the top floor.

Although it is only nine stories, each floor covers over an acre and a half. The City of New York purchased the building in 1993, for $36,930,000. It is home to the Department of Housing Preservation and Development, the largest municipal developer of affordable housing in the nation. Since 1987, HPD has provided over $8.7 billion to support the repair, rehabilitation and new construction of hundreds of thousands of units of housing.

100 Gold street served as a rest and relief center for rescue workers after the World Trade Center attack. It is also the location of an active Senior Citizen Center for residents in lower Manhattan, the Lower East Side, and Chinatown.
