Use of the former Soda Ash Settling Basin ended when General Chemical ceased production of Soda Ash in 2001. The 176 ac. facility is surrounded by 40 foot high walls and contains a mixture of calcium carbonate (limestone), calcium oxide (lime), sodium chloride (salt),sodium carbonate (soda ash) and calcium sulphate (gypsum) in a semi solid state with a liquid surface.
The U.S. parent firm of General Chemical agreed in 2009 to pay $17 million to the Province of Ontario for the permanent cleanup of the site. The funds were added to the sum of $3 million previously collected. The cleanup has yet to commence amid concerns that chloride may escape the basin and contaminate the ground water.
