Laysan Island

USA / Hawaii / Kekaha /
 beach, island, bird reserve

Laysan is one of the most important bird nesting grounds in the United States. It is the main breeding habitat for the Laysan Albatross and many thousands of other seabirds. It is also home to the endangered Laysan duck (Anas laysanesis), also known as the Laysan teal, the rarest native waterfowl in the United States, as well as the Hawaiian Monk Seal.

Recently Laysan island (as well as the rest of the Northwestern Hawaiian Island archipelago) became a protected environment. George W. Bush established the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands National Monument on June 15, 2006. An area larger than 46 of the 50 states encompassing the islands, and the waters around them, is now federally protected.
