Final resting place of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, his widow, Jacqueline (Jackie) Lee Bouvier Kennedy Onassis, and two of their young children. Robert F. Kennedy's grave is nearby.
After the assassination of the President, Jacqueline Kennedy requested an eternal flame for his gravesite. She was apparently inspired by the eternal flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France, which her husband had seen during a visit to France in 1961. The John F. Kennedy Eternal Flame directly above President Kennedy's grave is now a United States Presidential Memorial.
