LA FAYETTE, a village, first the site of a Hudson's Bay trading post incorporated as Shayenne City, May 23, 1857. A group of capitalists laid out a townsite in 1859 as La Fayette, advertising from 1859 to 1861 to encourage settlers and offering free land. In 1859, Randolph M. Probstfield began acquiring land near the trading post, and ten years later he disposed of his holdings, which included the townsite of La Fayette.
