The USS Sam Rayburn was a James Madison Class Ballistic Missile Submarine in service with the US Navy from 1964 to 1989 as part of the US Nuclear Deterrent Fleet during the Cold War.
Following her 1989 decommissioning, her missile tubes were filled with concrete and she was defueled to comply with new SALT terms. She was redesignated MTS 635 and towed to the Naval Nuclear Power Training Unit to serve as a training vessel for Ballistic Submarine crews.
