former US Naval Station - Charleston
also former Charleston Naval Air Station
now home to F.L.E.T.C. & U.S. Coast Guard M.L.E.A.,
The Charleston Naval Complex was located on the west bank of the Cooper River about 5 miles north of Charleston, South Carolina. There were multiple Naval commands located on the complex: Naval Shipyard (NSY), Naval Station (NS), Naval Fleet and Industrial Supply Center (FISC), Fleet and Mine Warfare Training Center (FMWTC), and the Naval Reserve Center (NRC) (which is not a closing facility) and several other small organizations. The Naval Station and Shipyard combined encompass approximately 1,800 acres.
Operations on the complex ceased on 01 April 1996 with the complex to be transferred sometime after that, depending on the cleanup schedule. The 1996 closure resulted in the loss of 8,722 military and 6,272 civilian jobs. Southern Division of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command is the cognizant caretaker for the base.
Currently more than 85 private, local, state and federal entities own or lease property on the CNC. They include Deytens Shipyards, Charleston Marine Manufacturing, Charleston Marine Containers, Carolina Marine Handling, Neal Brothers, Protected Vehicles Incorporated, Noisette Company, the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, the U.S. Postal Service, the U.S. Coast Guard, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the State Department. The South Carolina Ports Authority plans to establish a major marine cargo handling facility at the south end of the complex. Noisette Company has developed a Riverfront Park along the Cooper River and is in the process of creating an urban density city center in the northern portion of the CNC.
Additionally, the Confederate H.L. Hunley submarine is being examined and conserved on the former base, and Clemson University plans on purchasing property for a Restorative Institute. The complex also houses a new Academic Magnet High School for the Charleston County School District.
The former base is now home to the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) Charleston and U.S. Coast Guard Maritime Law Enforcement Academy,a well as moorings for the USCG Charleston Station
