Lockefield Gardens was the first public housing project completed in Indianapolis. Constructed during the years 1935 to 1938, it was built exclusively for low income African-Americans. The 24-building complex closed in 1976. By the early 1980s, only six of the original buildings had been saved from demolition; these were listed to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Later that decade, the complex was renovated and 11 modern buildings were added to the property, totaling nearly 500 apartment units.

  • Perfect Place to stay if you are studying or working in IUPUI.
  • When I lived at the medical center (1975-1979), this was an abandoned housing project. There had been talk of tearing it down, but they couldn't, as Eleanor Roosevelt had dedicated the land to this purpose, as it was the nation's first public housing project.
